The instrument known in English as cornett, in Italian as cornetto, and in German as zink is a Renaissance wind instrument with a small, brass-style cup mouthpiece and a wooden body similar to a recorder. Noted historical winds scholar Helmut Monkemeyer has assembled a book meant to provide progressively more challenging lessons for the cornett. Designed for experienced musicians picking up a new instrument, the book does not teach music reading, and the lessons are formatted as melodic duets, though each line may also be played separately.
