Matthew Driscoll

Dr. Matthew Driscoll (DMA University of Iowa, MA East Carolina University, BA Jacksonville State University) is Assistant Teaching Instructor in Trombone at East Carolina University and is also bass trombonist of the Durham Symphony Orchestra. Driscoll has taught music to nearly every age at some point in his career; two years of elementary music a few years of middle school band, and over fifteen years of college teaching. He was an instructor for three different colleges in Iowa including Kirkwood Community College (Cedar Rapids, IA), Cornell College (Mt. Vernon, IA), and Central College (Pella, IA). In these colleges he served as low brass instructor, taught brass methods courses, music appreciation, and performance seminar. Additionally, he performed with the Des Moines, Peoria, and Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphonies and has performed with the Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Quad City, Ottumwa, and Gadsden Symphony Orchestra (AL).

Commissioning new works has become a mission of Dr. Driscoll’s. In the spring of 2015 he premiered two new works for trombone and piano and one for unaccompanied trombone. Other new music projects include Durward Ensemble that has commissioned fifteen composers to write for this unique ensemble of instruments. In December 2018, Durward released its first recording, Daughters of Earth: new music of women composers. This recording can be found on any digital platform such as iTunes and many more. Driscoll enjoys being a part of the creative process from the onset and allowing lesser known composers to be heard in various concert settings.

While the majority of his performing career has been on the classical side, Driscoll loves to play any style of music. While in Iowa he played with a regional Chicago tribute band for seven years and played in many musical theatre productions in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.
