Variations on a Korean Folk Song is divided into the exposition of its pentatonic theme and five variations. "Arrirang" (arirang [pronounced ah-dee-dong]) is a traditional Korean folk song that has roots traced back to the eighth century. The word has no literal modern translation. There are numerous regional versions of the lyrics for this song as well as a variety of melodic embellishments attached to the tune. Generally, versions of Arirang have described love, sorrow, or oppression, and have often provided a sense of unity in difficult times.

The work uses pentatonic scales as its primary melodic language throughout. The work also uses whole-tone scales and modal derivatives of the B major (C-flat major) concert scale. The work requires the performance of styles ranging from expressive legato playing to march to maestoso fanfares.
