As in his earlier composition of 1991, Cajun Folk Songs, Ticheli uses folk melodies as inspiration for this two-movement work.  The precise origins of the folk songs are unknown, although the program notes provided in the full score cite the sources that Ticheli used to find the tunes.  Cajun Folk Songs 2 was commissioned by the Indiana Bandmasters Association and premiered at its annual convention by the Indiana All-State Band in March of 1997.  The first movement is dedicated to the memory of the composer's father, and the second movement is a celebration of the birth of the composer's nephew.
