Elegy for a Young American

for Concert Band

Excerpts below are used by permission of GIA Publications, Inc., and are from "Teaching Music Through Performance In Band - Volume 2"

An elegy is a sorrowful or melancholy musical setting in remembrance of a person who has died.  This piece was written in 1964, and dedicated to the memory of President John F. Kennedy.  The tempo of the work is a slow adagio, with the exception of a ten measure allegro near the end.  In a brilliant stroke by Lo Presti, the final knells of the funeral chimes leave the listener not with despair and emptiness, but rather a sense of growth and inner peace.
