Excerpts below are used by permission of GIA Publications, Inc., and are from "Teaching Music Through Performance In Band," Volume 1. Carter published his first work for band "Overture In Classical Style, in 1954. Although Carter wrote over forty pieces for band, Overture For Winds, published in 1959, remains a favorite. Dvorak included it in his Best Music For Young Band, and it appears on several state festival lists. Overture For Winds is in ternary form (fast, slow, fast). The faster A section melodies are newly composed, but the expressive theme in the slow B section comes from an unpublished work entitled Romantic Episode. Instrumentation: Piccolo, Flutes, Oboes, Bassoons, Clarinets, Saxophones, Cornets, Horns, Trombones, Baritones, Tubas, String Bass, Timpani, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Cymbals.
