Recitativo: "Ernestine, que vax-tu faire?" Joseph Boulogne (1739-99) better known as the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, was one of the earliest musicians of African ancestry to make a major impression in the world of European concert music.
Ernestine was the first of perhaps 7 operas composed by Boulogne between 1777 and 1790. The recitative and aria presented here occur at a point in the story when the heroine, Ernestine, is separated from her lover, Clemangis. It offers one of the most dramatic examples of the composer's talent.
Aria: "O Clemangis, lis dans mon ame"
