Schumann's Davidsbündlertänze Op. 6 was created in 1837. The League of David, named after the patron saint of music, the biblical philistine fright and royal singer, is to be understood as a romantic-literary staging that was inspired by poetic models as well as real artistic or political connections from the pre-March period. The Davidsbündlertänze are a cycle of two nine pieces in which the traditions of the suite and the cycle of variations continue to operate. The edition is based on the second edition edited by Schumann himself, whereby musically significant deviations from the first version are also printed in small engravings.
