Louis’ Loops was written for the bendy fingers of Margaret Leng Tan, New York’s Kinky Dinky Diva (of
the toy piano). When I heard Margaret’s tiny instruments, the timbre reminded me somewhat of the
harpsichord. I decided to revisit one of my neglected loves – the French Clavecin School – and, in
this particular instance Louis Couperin (1626-1661). Absorbed into Louis’ Loops are snippets of three
dance movements by Couperin – ‘Courante’, ‘Sarabande en Canon’ and ‘Canaries’. I wanted to write
a piece that combined virtuosity and playfulness, hence the nursery rhyme fragments appearing so
often in the piece. - Errollyn Wallen
