First published in the fourth volume of Select Harmony (1740), the Oboe Concerto No. 1 is generally believed to date from a much earlier period in Handel’s life – probably between 1706 – 1710, when he worked in Florence and Rome. It opens with an Adagio, leading to an Allegro, followed by a Siciliana and a final short Vivace, in the rhythm of a minuet, suggesting immediate kinship with the Oboe Concerto in G minor (HWV 287), which is written in the same form.
