Robert Stephenson has composed two woodwind quartets based on 'American' folksongs. "Quartet No. 2" includes stories of love and loneliness, pride and prejudice, progress and caution, death, hard work and the American West. It is a reflection of who we are and where we've been. Like people themselves, folksongs are forever evolving. Oftentimes, the lyrics change to fit the situation or the harmony and melody change to fit the mood. Folksongs may vary greatly in interpretation and popularity. Music can tell a story and these stories can be made more impactful when combined with a memorable tune. Regardless, the spirit that is America remains.
From the campfires of North America to the Gulf of Mexico, from the sailors at sea to the country's expansion west, America is a vast and varied land. But in all directions music has a role. It tells a story both colorful and enduring. Through our everlasting folksongs we connect to our past, accompany the present and celebrate what's to come. Scored for flute, oboe, clarinet in A/B-flat, and bassoon. Score and individual parts are included. Total duration: approximately 14 minutes.
- 1. House of the Rising Sun and John Henry
