Kalimbas are reed instruments that originated in southern Africa, where they can be found in countless shapes and designs. Our Kalimba B11 'Melody' is carefully handcrafted from solid American cherry (black cherry). The surfaces are treated and polished with vegetable oils and waxes. The 11 reeds are precisely tuned in the G major scale, allowing a variety of well-known songs to be played. The "Melody" is also suitable for improvisation and intuitive playing.
When arranging the reeds, we have alternately mounted long and shorter reeds for technical and tonal reasons. The six shorter tongues have been bent so that their ends are in a higher plane than those of the long tongues, so that they can be easily reached by the thumbs. When playing the notes from low to high, first the five long reeds are plucked alternately with both thumbs from the middle to the outside - the right thumb starts on tongue no. 6 - then the six short tongues, also from the middle outwards. The left thumb starts on tongue 5.
The Kalimba B11 electric model was equipped with a piezo pickup and a 6.35 mm jack. This makes it possible to pick up the sound directly from the instrument without an additional microphone.
