Description

Editor's Preface

Is is the author-composer's purpose to provide original exercises as studies in new music styles, within the tessitura of all keyboard percussion instruments.

Basically, the styles represented are tonal, serial, and indeterminate.

Some tonal devices are drawn from impressionism and exoticism. Pedal-tones, escape tones, pyramid tones, and multi-measure signatures are also used.

Standard serial devices include rows, disjunct rhythms, rhythmic modulations, arythmic and athematic material, dynamic rows, and examples of exacerbated lyricism.

Indeterminate studies are written in either traditional, or graphic notations, or both; include irrational values, and odd-shaped note symbols, most in un-measured abstractions.

The technical demands of the performer-student include careful pointing of beamed groups, phrases, proper distribution of primary accents, and strict dynamic interpretation.
