The theme for the following Andante movement of this quartet was used also by Schubert in his well known "Rosamunde" ballet music. The opus 29 quartet was the only one which appeared in print during his lifetime and was first performed in 1824 by the Rasoumowsky Quartet. It was described at the time as "very smooth and gentle, but has the kind of melody that one associates with songs." At that time Schubert was in poor health and depressed; in his own words he was the "most unhappy and wretched creature in the world." His writing of this period reflects the sadness of his short life. Includes score and parts
