The purpose of Part Two of Scales and Arpeggios for the Saxophone is twofold - firstly to acquaint the player of elementary or intermediate standard with the full range of scales, arpeggios and trills, and additionally to provide the more advanced player with a comprehensive workbook that covers all the elements of daily scalic practice. For this reason, Part Two has been clearly divided into sections - beginning with scales and arpeggios in their most straightfoward form, as required for higher grade or diploma examinations (section A), then breaking the scales down into various intervals from a third (section B) to an octave (sections C, D, E), and finally presenting a section on trills, probably the saxophonist's most effective finger relaxation exercise (section F). Daily scalic practice with a metronome is a priority for Saxophonists of all levels of ability. The metronome must always be set at a comfortable speed, so that all scales are practiced at the same speed. Clarity and precision at a slow speed is the only way to acquire an even and flexible technique.
