Eccles composed primarily for his instrument: the violin. A wonderful example of his mastery is the Sonata No. 11 from the Premier livre de sonates a violon seul et la basse (composed around 1720). Today, this sonata is also often played in an arrangement for viola, cello or double bass. But it is just as well suited for bassoon and thus expands the repertoire of Baroque sonatas with a wonderfully varied and colourful piece.
The present arrangement is based on the first printing. Only for the end of the 2nd and 4th movements has the later and more virtuoso version been chosen, as it fits better with the bassoon. The articulations have been deliberately included in dashed form, as they are based on the string instrument. As was common practice at the time, they may be designed independently according to the Baroque rules and adapted to the respective instrument. The adoption of the few dynamic designations was deliberately avoided because they were not used very consistently.
