Fantasy and Dance - Bb Clarinet & Piano

The two movements of Fantasy and Dance (composed in 1987) are played without a break. The clarinet recitative that opens the fantasy and which is recalled throughout the composition presents motives that are later expanded into the thematic material of both movements. The remainder of the fantasy moves through several related sections that explore different tonal areas and textural combinations. The dance is in a broad A- B -A form wherein the quick tempo and changing meters genereate a rhythmic vitality that both challenges players and offers listeners an exciting conclusion to the work.
