The third movement of J.S. Bach’s Concerto in A major, BWV 1055, is characterised by a wonderful lyrical radiance. The distinction between ritornello and solo sections is handled here with a gently accommodating decorum, encouraging luminous and sympathetic ensemble playing. The genial melodic character – strikingly shorn of polyphonic interplay and complexity – is notably gallant and elicits a spirit of private but solicitous joy. It is thought by some that this was once an oboe d’amore concerto, though only a source for harpsichord and strings from the 1730s exists – doubtless performed in the Collegium Musicum by Bach’s children and students. Delivering an easy and spontaneous-sounding articulation is the main challenge for the trumpeter seeking an agreeable and sonorous narrative.
