For horn and piano. Dukas wrote this piece at the request of Gabriel Faure, who had recently been appointed director of the Paris Conservatoire and was reforming the annual examination repertoire. The piece was written for the performer to use both natural and valve horn, as the Conservatoire had only begun teaching the valve horn in 1897. Many technical notes on valve use and stopping are included in the score; the work practically serves as an overview of playing techniques taught at the Conservatoire. Although he originally intended to orchestrate the accompaniment for this piece, Dukas later decided he did not want his composition to become a concert work and refused to create an orchestration. Based on the horn and piano autograph and first edition.
