In the context of Mozart's music, a flute quartet consists of flute, violin, viola, and cello. Different ones of Mozart's flute quartets were composed at different times. The first three quartets were written at Mannheim during the 1777-78 season. The fourth quartet (K. 298) was written during the 1780s, probably in Vienna. Some scholars may be inclined to attach K. 285b chronologically to the fourth quartet. The flute quartets have differing numbers of movements. K. 285 in D -- Allegro. Adagio. Rondeau. K. 285a in G -- Andante. Tempo di Menuetto. K. 285b (K. Anh. 171) in C -- Allegro. Theme and six variations. K. 298 in A -- Theme and four variations. Menuetto. Rondeau: Allegretto grazioso. The second movement of the K. 285b quartet is a theme and six variations, having much in common with the sixth movement of the Serenade for 13 Winds, K. 361. The main themes of the K. 298 quartet were borrowed from a German Lied, a French folk song, and an Italian aria. The G. Schirmer set of parts is a practical performing edition by Louis Moyse. This set omits the Quartet in G, K. 295a. Parts have rehearsal letters but no measure numbers.
