Gerald Finzi (1901-56) studied music privately with Ernest Farrar, Edward Bairstow, and R. O. Morris. He taught at the Royal Academy of Music from 1930 to 1933 and founded an amateur string orchestra in 1939. He was also an accomplished grower of apples. The Gerald Finzi website says that the Clarinet Concerto in "Finzi's most widely performed and regarded orchestral work." He composed the music in 1948-49. Frederick Thurston gave the first performance in 1949.
