Bernhard Heiden (born Bernhard Levi) was one of the many European refugee musicians fleeing the Nazi government of Germany, settling in Detroit in 1935 and becoming an American citizen in 1941. After World War II he obtained a Master's degree in musicology at Cornell University and then taught composition for many years at Indiana University. During the Detroit years, Mrs. Heiden taught piano lessons in a home owned by Larry Teal, and it was through this connection that the Sonata came to be written, having its first performance in 1937. The work came to publication in 1943.
