Bernhard Heiden (1910-2000, born Bernhard Levi) was one of the many European refugee musicians fleeing the Nazi government of Germany, settling in Detroit in 1935 and becoming an American citizen in 1941. After World War II he obtained a Master's degree in musicology at Cornell University and then taught composition for many years at Indiana University. Heiden composed Diversion in 1943 with accompaniment by a small Army band. R. Mark Rogers has produced an edition with slightly expanded instrumentation, issued in 2015 (Southern Music S398CB, distributed as Hal Leonard 00137320). Dr. Rogers has written extensive program notes and editorial comments for the band publication. The piano reduction was devised by the composer.
