The seventh of ten children, Alfred Desenclos (1912-1971) was born at Le Pertel, in the Pas-de-Calais. He got a late start in professional musical training, starting at age 20, but by 1943 he had become Director of his alma mater, the Conservatory of Roubaix, holding the position until 1950. He won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1942 and the Grand Prix de la ville de Paris in 1954. Prelude, Cadence et Finale was a 1950s test piece for the Paris Conservatory, where Desenclos himself eventually began teaching harmony in 1967.
