Alfred Reed (1921-2005) began his professional career as a radio network composer and arranger for ABC and NBC. He was a university orchestra conductor for two years and then an editor for a music publishing company. At the University of Miami he organized and taught courses in music business. A prolific composer for the concert band, many of his works are still in print with several publishers. According to the publisher's note, Ballade was the product of a commission from the G. LeBlanc Corporation in 1955, written for their saxophone clinician, Vincent Abato. The first performance was with a music camp band in 1958. The present publication is with piano accompaniment.
