Mozart composed the Trio in E-flat in 1786. It was first published in Vienna in 1788. The first printed edition provided a violin part as a substitute for the clarinet. The modern editions that we carry have parts for either clarinet or violin. The word "Kegelstatt" or skittle alley has to do with a game of skittles or nine pins. This nickname may actually refer to the circumstances of composing a set of 12 duets for wind instruments, K. 487, also composed in 1786. The Henle set of parts is edited according to the Urtext principle and may require additional markings to be made practical for performance.
