Description

The Sixth Symphony, op. 59, is Vierne's last major work conceived for the organ of Notre-Dame. Besides the Quatre poemes grecs, op. 60 (for voice and harp or piano) and the Ballade du desespere, op. 61 (for tenor and or-chestra or piano), merely the somber Stele pour un enfant defunt, op. 58, no. 3, and the Messe basse pour les defunts, op. 62, were written for organ in the period that followed. In the manuscript - it is the last organ work that he wrote down himselfl - Vierne dated the Symphony "Roquebrune, 15 ]uly-15 September 1930." During that summer, which he spent at the Richepin family's country house in Carnoles near Menton on the Mediterranean, Vierne also played an organ concert in the cathedral in Monaco? The Symphony was published at the beginning of September of the following year.
