Text in German and English The four Anthems* were all written in Handel's London period at the Chapel Royal. "As pants the hart" ("So wie der Hirsch nach Wasser schreit"), his fifth setting of this psalm text, the composer wrote for a charity event in March 1738 for the King's Theater at the Haymarket. Until just before Handel's first stay in England, all the instruments except the organ were forbidden to accompany the liturgy in the Chapel Royal. Thus, the four orchestral-accompanied works also represent something like a new genre of English church music. Instrumentation for the four Anthems: *Anthems:
