Dmitri Kabalevsky (1904-1987) is best known to Americans as a composer of piano music for students at all levels and for certain orchestral works. In the Soviet Union he was a composer, pianist, professor of composition, music editor, and writer of articles. He was an active Communist and devotee of Socialist Realism and served on musical and non-musical Soviet committees. Kabalevsky composed his Violin Concerto in 1949, writing at an advanced student level. However, professionals have also performed the Concerto and David Oistrakh made an early recording.
