Description

For two flutes and cello. Set includes parts, no score.  Flute 1 part holds a Preface and editorial endnotes.  A study score is published separately (Henle HN9454 / Hal Leonard 51489454).

The London Trios are a set of eight movements, composed in 1794.  These were first published in the form of two works of three movements each and two single movements.  In Trio I, there are two versions of the second movement, the second being slightly shorter than the first.  The Henle, Amadeus, and Peters editions present both versions of the second movement as having been authorized by Haydn.

The seemingly incomplete nature of the two single movements, plus the alteration of another, has attracted recombinations of the set of eight in most published editions.  The Henle edition presents the array of movements as originally offered to the public in print.  The Peters edition recognizes three trios only, while omitting one movement.  The Amadeus edition uses one movement twice and reassigns others, claiming to be in accord with their sources.

Three other editions are similar to one another in their lineup of movements.  These are the Baerenreiter, International, and Southern editions.  In these editions, the slow movement of Trio I is an amalgamation of the earlier and later versions, presumably the work of editor Leo Balet in 1931.

The Henle layout of movements is as follows:

Trio I:  Allegro moderato, 4/4 in C.  Andante (earlier and later versions), 6/8 in G.  Vivace, 2/4 in C.

Trio II:  Spiritoso, 4/4/ in G.  Andante, 6/8 in C.  Allegro, 3/4 in G.  (Same movements as Trio III in other editions).

[Trio III]:  Triosatz in G:  No tempo marking.  (Same movement as Trio IV in other editions).

[Trio IV]:  Andante in G.  [Andante, 2/4 in G Major to G minor and Allegro, 2/4 in G Major].  (Same as Trio II in other editions.)

Editorial markings correspond closely to Haydn's own.  No dynamic marks.
