Alexander Goedicke (1877-1957) lived all his life in Moscow. He studied piano at the Moscow Conservatory, where he later taught. He was not, however, formally trained in composition. Goedicke composed operas, orchestral music, chamber music, and piano music, including piano transcriptions of organ works. He and his music seem to have been non-controversial to the Stalinist regime, which perhaps is what kept him out of the headlines, out of the gulag, and alive. Goedicke composed his Concert Etude in 1948 with orchestral accompaniment, but also made a piano reduction. The Universal Music edition, distributed by Hal Leonard (00121835), presents the solo part for trumpet in B-flat. The International Music edition (1728I), entitled Concert Study, presents the solo part for trumpet in C. Neither edition changes the sounding key of the work, which is G minor.
