For clarinet (with bass clarinet), 2 violins, viola, and cello. Includes score and parts. 25 minutes Gumboots, by British composer David Bruce, is a virtuoso tour de force for clarinetist and string quartet alike. Part One features the bass clarinet, while Part Two is a series of dance movements featuring soprano clarinet. Bruce takes his inspiration for the work from the gumboot dancing of South Africa, where the slapping of rubber boots served as a kind of communication for black miners in the era of apartheid and later developed into a dance.
