If you are a serious high school or college timpani student, this edition is specifically for you. The individual works in this collection were chosen not only because they are in the standard symphonic and operatic repertoire, but in the hope of providing you with a clear overview of the development of timpani composition and performance over the course of the 18th century. Up until about 1800, the responsibilities of the timpanist was to provide rhythmic, harmonic and dynamic support for the orchestra. By the early 1900's, the timpani had become a versatile instrument capable of creating canvases of extraordinary color, subtle nuances of phrase a texture as well as full blown melodic statements.
