Description

By the terms of a newly negotiated contract with the Esterhazy family, concluded in 1779, Haydn was permitted to seek publishers for his works.  The Three Trios were advertised by Breitkopf in a 1781 catalog, but their actual date of composition is unknown.  The first Haydn symphony to use clarinets, No. 99, was composed in 1793, so it is something of a surprise to see these trios from 1781 or before, with skillful if circumspect writing for the clarinet.

The trios are multi-movement works that are good for interlacing with other chamber music as event background music or for concerts.  The clarinet part could be considered advanced intermediate or early advanced.  Some markings for articulation and dynamics, beyond those already printed, will need to be settled on by the players.

This edition was first issued in 1977 by C. F. Peters and consists of a score and three parts.  Postface and editorial comments by Klaus Burmeister.
