Mozart seems to have tried a couple of alternatives to his famous Clarinet Quintet in A. One is the fragmentary quintet movement in B-flat, with concert ending by Robert Levin, published by Baerenreiter (NMA221). The other is this fragmentary quintet movement in F for standard clarinet in B-flat, basset horn with extension to low C, and string trio. Notation of the basset horn part uses bass clef for the lowest passages. These notes should be played an octave higher than written. The basset instrument is not the Stadler style basset clarinet, but the alto clarinet in F, known as the basset horn. For this fragment, editor Franz Beyer has filled in parts that were missing in the sketch and provided a concert ending. His editorial preface gives additional information. This set includes a score with the parts.
