Composed in 1978 for solo piano. The title borrowed from Mozart is here colored in an ironic hue. Ideas taken from wide-ranging sources (including folk song, medieval music, Lieder, and the ballad) coalesce into a dramatic piece described as "a small-scale requiem for the hope of people of all ages." Graphic notation is employed throughout, and the work ends with an extended technique that imitates a heartbeat.
