DIARIUM for violin solo was commissioned by Reula Ruegge in 1999 and is dedicated to the violinist Stefan Tonz. Like any compositions, which I write for musicians I know well, DIARIUM is based on a dodecaphonic nucleus, a twelve-tone row, which is derived from the name of Regula and is created in the way that the tones 7 and 12 form the inversion of the tones 1 to 6; actually all parameters of this solo piece refer to her (first) name. However, it seems important to me to point out that the whole composition is nevertheless no serial work because I took myself a lot of musical freedom despite the prescribed construction. -D.P.H.
