Description

The Concerto for Oboe by Alessandro Marcello is one of the most popular works in the oboe repertoire. It is typical of instrumental concerti in the Venetian style consisting of three movements, with a slow expressive aria between two faster movements, the final one usually in 3/8. It was probably written between 1708-1712.

This edition has been transcribed for soprano saxophone and piano by Eugene Rousseau. Although the original edition was in C minor, Dr. Rousseau feels that D minor is a more suitable key for the soprano saxophone. Dr. Rousseau's preference in the second movement is to use a minimal amount of ornamentation, which is in sharp contrast to the version of the same movement created by J.S. Bach. He has included the ornamentation used for his recording with the Budapest String Soloists on RIAX (RICA-1002), The Undowithoutable Instrument. The performer should feel free to add their own personal ornamentation and articulations.
