The anonymous theme “Ah, vous dirai-je Maman” was well-known in Paris by 1761. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart first heard it there and most probably composed variations on it in the summer of 1781 or 1782 in Vienna in order to use during lessons with his students. This edition is based on two autograph fragments; unfortunately the first print of the work is incomplete which made it necessary to draw on a clean copy of the first print located at Kremsier Castle (Czech Republic) for the parts that are missing in the other two sources.
