Fourish for Wind Band Excerpts below are used by permission of GIA Publications, Inc., and are from "Teaching Music Through Performance In Band - Volume 1" Flourish for Wind Band is a single-movement work in ABA form. It was composed as an overture to the pageant Music And The People. At a concise sixty-three measures, it stands as the shortest work Vaughan Williams wrote for military band. Although first performed in London, England in 1939, the score was subsequently lost until rediscovered in 1971, and so the piece in its present edition for concert band was not published until 1972. As the title suggests, the work is in the style of a fanfare, with a sostenuto B section separating the fanfare style of the two A sections. A performance of the piece will have a duration of approximately 1:45. For bands at the Grade 3 performance level, this small gem is an excellent introduction to the wind band compositions of Ralph Vaughan Williams. Instrumentation: Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Eb Clarinet, Bb Clarinet, Alto Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Contra Alto Clarinet, Contra Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Cornet 1-3, Trumpet 1-2, Horn 1-4, Trombone 1-4, Baritone TC, Baritone BC, Tuba, String Bass, Timpani, Bass Drum, Side Drum, Cymbals. Includes score and parts
