In a 60-90 minute Traditional Djembe drum lesson, participants will learn basic hand techniques, practice traditional West African rhythms, and engage in call-and-response exercises. They will explore the cultural significance of the Djembe, build ensemble skills, and experience the joy of collective music-making through rhythm and drumming patterns.

Instructor/Facilitator: Joshua (Brotha Ase) Gillespie

Joshua (Brotha Ase) Gillespie is a passionate storyteller, traditional Drummer and artist from North Minneapolis, deeply rooted in the tradition of Oral Storytelling. Inspired by his grandpar-ents, master storytellers Vusumuzi and Nothan-do Zulu, he carries on their legacy through spo-ken word, African drumming/ drum building and visual arts. As a member of the National Associ-ation of Black Storytellers (NABS), Brotha Ase is dedicated to community work, serving as the Music and Art Director for Urban Ventures, board member for several arts organizations. With 20 years of traditional drum experience taught by Ghana Mbaye, Onayemi Ogunkoye, Fara Bangoura, and many more he considers himself a student taught by the village. He teaches at various student programs including We Win Institute, Freedom School, and Urban Ventures. Driven by a belief that our stories and abilities are seeds from the divine, Brotha Ase continues to inspire and nurture his community through his diverse talents.
